Close-up look at an abandoned seaside village 🇯🇵 UNO PORT
I spent a day walking the streets of the port of Uno in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Once the bustling main point to get between Honshu and Shikoku, nowadays Uno has shrunk, its ferry train discontinued in favor of the Great Seto Bridge a few kilometers away. Uno has declined, but is still home to 5,000 people and a few ferry services that still take tourists to nearby islands. Rarely do people come here, and when they do, they almost never stay the night and actually see the town. But I did. What I found was a motley collection of some of the most unique pieces of local art anywhere in Japan, and a community of friendly residents and charming old neighborhoods.

Should JR retire this old train? 🇯🇵 SUPER INABA
Просмотров 866День назад
This is a look at the ride on the "JR Super Inaba" limited express train from Tottori to Okayama in central Japan. The route, which winds for two hours through stunning green, sunny mountains and beside gorgeous rivers, is unimpeachable. The train itself - a two-car diesel one from 2003 - is showing its age. Other services boast newer and/or better trains, so it may be time for JR to think abou...
Train chaos almost ruins trip to this rural town 🇯🇵 HOSHIGAOKA

Train lines were in chaos this morning as I tried to find my way to the small community of Hoshigaoka, out on the far eastern edge of Osaka Prefecture, Japan. After some waiting and an inspired change of plans, I eventually made it to Hoshigaoka, late but successful. I spent the day wandering the hilly, narrow streets of this quiet, little-known outpost. A look at the grimy side of "deep Osaka" 🇯🇵 ANRYŪMACHI

What's life in a forgotten little dusty corner of far southern Osaka, Japan like? I took the Hankai Tramway, Osaka's only streetcar, south from Tennoji to the stop at Anryūmachi (安立町) to take a look. The area is rough-and-tumble - decaying, but only to a point. Amid the rusty iron shacks and misshapen little alleyways are quaint shops, gorgeous old temples (I got a spontaneous private tour of o...

The top of the mountain offers observation platforms and promises views in 360º over the landscapes below. On the day I was there, there were signs everywhere warning...

We used the auto-train many times between 2011 and 2019 to go to Disney! It was always a pleasant experience! I don’t like to, nor want to fly so this was a great alternative! Keep in mind, Amtrak uses freight lines south of D.C. So you’re gonna see the train stop many time along this route. Also, things have been different with Amtrak since the pandemic.

Amtrak is outdated. Air travel, hands down, is more convenient. However, they can improve and reinvent their model. Intercity rail is lacking for much of the country, and if they could get it together and be a premier player in 1-3 hour trips from major city to city in high speed rail, they’d win. I honestly see Brightline and Amtrak merging at some point to accomplish this, because lord knows our government could care less.

Several years ago, another couple along with my wife and I survived the Auto Train. When we were near the Virginia station, we decided to get something to eat as we had no idea when they would be serving food on the train. I guess we should have known that as soon as the train started moving, they started serving. The dining car we were sent to was packed. Next to it was another dining car that was empty. We went in there. They came and told us that we couldn't sit in that car. When we explained that we could not sit together in the other car, they told us we would have to move and share tables. We just said "No." They let us stay. As the evening progressed, we walked around the train a bit. Some of the cars were unbearably hot while others felt like freezers. It was not pleasant. We were very happy to get off the train in Sanford and were not looking forward to the ride back. Based on the trip down, we did not eat before we got on the train for the return trip. The train left on time and we got called for dinner about 4 hours later. The temperature on board was better but the doors between some of the cars would not open when you pushed the button that was supposed to open them. You had to pry them apart by hand. We had several unplanned stops on the way back so we were quite late when we were getting back into Virginia. We got close enough to the station that we could see it when the train stopped. Then it just sat there with no explanation why. After an hour or so with still no movement, one of the other passengers came by and said that the President of Auto Train was in a private car at the end of the train. A bunch of us went to pay him a visit. We pounded on the car door until a valet finally answered it. We yelled at him until he finally got the boss. He got more than a earful from us. Basically we told him that his train sucked. I can guarantee that I am never getting on that train again.

They even gave the guy before me a "prize" for being the last person to get their car back, and they made a big deal of it. The only problem was I still didn't have MY car back LONG after the supposed last person got their car. I think it took another hour to be reunited with my Mitsubishi Mirage after the crack AmTrack employees finally tracked it down.
